Good, but Pulsar is slightly better. In what way? The color is more "Manley" in my opinion.

The color is more "Manley" in my opinion. Right on. I've never used the real thing, so I have no frame of reference to work off. I did listen to some A/B samples of the manly and the UAD and they were almost identical. There was that bit of unquantifiable "mojo" or whatever to the Manley examples, but it certainly wasn't night and day.

One thing that jumps out at me is EQ on bus, I almost never do that. It’s not something I do all the time, but sometimes just a small nudge here or there is really helpful. Or sometimes it’s just the so-called “boxtone” of the processor that I like. If it’s truly corrective EQ, then clearly the problem is better addressed somewhere other than the Mix Bus.

Ampex 440b to tube console line gain to Burl That should get the job done! What tube console options are you on? Something like a Tree Audio?

Anyone using a Neve 33609 style comp on their 2 buss? I've been using the UAD plugin version a lot instead lately of their SSL G Comp as I've done in the past. Been debating grabbing a Heritage Successor, which I know is based on it but geared specifically toward Buss duties, or even their HA609.

A few times in the past I heard a pair of 2254's across the bus and it was amazing. Keep in mind the mix was running through a 8048 Neve. Taking that mix home and listening through my own system (all in the box at the time) was an eye/ear opening experience. I had the board mix to compare it too and it was night and day worse (in the box) compared to the board mix. I've lusted after a pair ever since. I will say though that it's not a sound I would go for for everything.

The originals have the reputation of being pretty noisy I think. I ve never had the pleasure though. Cheers, Geoff

I do like a couple different 2254 plugs that I put on the mix bus every now and then. More often on the drum bus. Would be very, very cool to have a hardware piece. But yes, it’s for sure a strong character.

Not sure if I'll keep it, think I'd get more use out of a DBC-M for what I do.

YES! Although I rarely use it on the mix buss while I'm mixing, a revolutionary moment for me was when I was mastering a record, and it just sounded flat and "dead" no matter what I did. I put the bricasti in the path, near the end of the chain, and dialed up Studio A at about 50-60% wet. Client fell on the floor. My jaw had to be re-attached. Brought back real life to the mixes. Odd choice for those who may have not used one or own one, but definitely a go to for me now. Especially during mastering. (emphasis mine) I concur. It's difficult to explain the magic of an M7 to those who've not used them first-hand (or first-ear). Perfect for the mastering chain. Well, and on so many other things, too. -09

Old and custom the way to go. Would love to get a nice tube console some day.
Glad you recognized it! Never been but Studio Umiliani seemed like was such a cool spot, and a big fan of his stuff. I think it even still exists which is crazy.

One thing that jumps out at me is EQ on bus, I almost never do that. It's interesting. I do like to do sort of broadband bass and treble boosts like I do on my home stereo, but what I've found most helpful is the teaching nature of it. Sometimes if I get tunnel-hearing I'll use the mix buss eq to let me know where I need to sift through individual tracks to enhance or address issues. Since I've started looking at it that way, I've been doing less EQ'ing to the whole mix. Sometimes a .25db nudge is that last 5% too. But defaulting to a method never really worked out all that well for me.

Damn....yeh that would be pretty much ideal for me. Perfect for tracking, and useful for most mixing projects I'd be looking to do out of the box anyways. Inserts for the Channels an option? Would love something like Ch1/2/3 VariMu, Ch4/5 FET, Ch6 Opto or something like that

BG1 Stereo always for me. I’ve been trying out the Kush AR-1 plugin on the master lately and it’s got me imagining how good a BG-1 would be. I only had the money for a Serpent SB4001 and it’s served well over the last few years and is a good compressor but I would love to add a Vari-Mu option to the studio.
