Thank you everyone for taking the time to help me out by posting about your thoughts and experiences.....it really is cool. I am trying to work through what happens upon registration (cause I might return this thing within 30 days) whether or not there is some sort of registration offer when you first register, etc etc... its all clear as mud. I see UA have changed their customer service hours since UAD1 days to just a few hours a day, which is a real pain for me being in the completely wrong time zone... so I am searching around furiously trying to find out whats what before this thing gets here tomorrow. I am looking for a simpler easier setup. I like the idea of the X8 and if the plug in versions of the outboard I have here, do the job, then I can move that gear on. I own a 1073 preamp (BAE DMP) and a real V72 so I am interested in comparing them... though I can't imagine they sound as good...maybe? I also have LA2A and 1176 and DBX160 hardware, and I really keen on trying the later versions of those UAD plugs against them. cheers Wiz I can’t wait to hear your thoughts once you have given the new interface a spin

In my opinion, the unison pres don’t sound as good as a real pre. The exception might be the Helios or the 1290. I keep a couple good pres and one good HW comp for tracking prominent tracks...well, since I do it mostly one at a time, I hardly ever use anything but the HW. It’s the weight that it still doesn’t get imo, but the gain reduction is dead on. It’s close though, man. Really close. It wouldn’t stop you from making great tracks.

You’ve always been a big analog guy.

Three things that I find most important and useful from the UA world:
1. Ampeg amp sims 2. Auto Tune Realtime Advanced 3. Raw (Rat) distortion pedal
Getting a clanky, driven, clear, deep, and compressed bass tone easily and quickly on a full-band tracking day without committing to it is super helpful. One input and I'm getting something close enough to where I want to go eventually that the live tracking feels like the finished track without having to worry about going too far with the drive/clank/etc.. Monitor the amp sim but record the clean DI (or if I love it I can print the amp sim). Awesome!
Making a vocalist feel more confident is almost always going to get a better performance. Some light real-time autotune to nudge the pitch closer (if that sort of thing is helpful for the performance) has been great. That little bit more confidence in what they're doing takes their mind and their worry off their pitch and allows them to put it all on the performance. It's been super helpful in my world!
I always find a way to use the Raw distortion pedal on every mix. Vocals or drum parallel or a DI guitar before an amp sim or whatever. It's nice to have an option of something that sounds good and gnarly that isn't taxing on my CPU.
I could see someone really digging in to the compressors or the tape stuff but I have a workflow and plugins I rely on for that stuff already. I'm not super interested in tinkering with a bunch of that stuff. Console 1 channel strips (which you can substitute most UAD plugs into), other plugs where necessary, LA2A on bass bus because it sounds good, and it's all good! The interface (Apollo 8 not even the x8 ) sounds good so I'm stoked!

UA has one big authorization file which may take you a while to download , install is pretty straightforward.
There are good setting up apollo with logic videos which will help !

UAD is best for DI into into old Marshall amp sims running off the interface and reverbs. Not really the high gain Marshalls. The 33609 is cool too.

It arrived this am. Nice packaging. Installed, and after the usual futz around of trying to learn something new, console software etc... got it up and running. Tried a few things, and did a quick mix of Hey Darlin' from the Self Production thread The new plug ins are way better than the legacy stuff from my UAD1 days... The ATR tape plug in is exceptional. The 4K buss plug in is really great Capitol Chambers, apart from not being true stereo, is exceptional The new LA2A's sound great and love the different flavours. The new Fairchild is excellent The Neve 1073 is wonderful The 175s are great The Ampeg B15 is killer As far as the unison preamps go, as I already have a 1073 and a V72 , they won't see much use I don't think. Here is the mix of Hey Darlin, with the plugs above used. Hey Darlin UAD mix
NO UAD Mix Hey Darlin No UAD
This pretty much maxed out my Hexa Core. The new plug ins are DSP Hungry.... digging it atm Cheers Wiz
