Looking for some perspective for my drum OH's:
A new pair of pultec EQP-1s for my existing coles 4038's
Or
A new pair of Royer SF-2's
Your thoughts please...

The Royers will deliver a whole different (equally beautiful) sound imho. I'd go that direction.

Which would provide you with more uses than just overheads? I think the coles are a standard for a reason. I freelance, so I don't need a lot of mics, but I would probably still roll with the Pultecs because you can track your coles with them, then use em again when you're mixing.

I would do the Pultecs personally. Anything you can use in tracking, mixing, or master buss is worth the money to me.

Really happy with SF-12 on OHs when I've used it. Kind of a treat to position since it's two ribbons in a single housing, but I could see going for the mono version x2.

mics. I rarely, if ever, use EQ outside the box.

mics. I rarely, if ever, use EQ outside the box. Conversely, I almost never use EQ IN the box. But I also rarely use EQ that isn't built into my console, either.
