Big Star's September Gurls. Some awful high-end stuff going on. Incredible song. Bad mix.

There are so many, but the second Kiss album is at the top for me.

The 1st Roxy Music album. Deep pleasure, shitty sound. Attachments:

I would like to suggest several of Black Sabbath’s early albums; especially Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Paranoid, and Masters of Reality. Everything sounds like it’s about to blow up in a most glorious way.

Shit - almost forgot my favorite in this category: Chainsaw Kittens' Violent Religion. One of the greatest albums of all-time and sounds like hell in many ways. The guitar sounds are just awful. The songs are absolutely amazing though. Brilliant record.
Edit: guitars -> guitar sounds

Sorry, not meant as any sort of a minor derail, but how about “decent” recordings and terrible songs...or a brilliant song, depending on your own personal proclivities...haha!

Subjective / objective as always. I see lots of things in this list described as crap recordings that I’d never think that of. Older major label expensive professional recordings by lauded engineers. So that’s a style thing.

The Kinks Waterloo Sunset. The acoustic guitar sound is laughably bad but it doesn't matter. The strength of the song and the vocal transcends whatever deficiencies the recording has.

Paranoid, in fact, is probably the apex of loud guitar tones. Masters... is one of my favorite mixes ever. So dark and simple.

The irony is that even recorded to today's metal standards most people would think its horrible. haha Dunno.
IMO metal shat the bed around the early/mid '90s to the early 2000s.
nonsense. The new Darkthrone record sounds amazing, btw.

I know I loved the sound of the first album. It could be that I was the one who was "messed up" thinking back on it. Maybe it was my brain that was about to blow up in a most glorious way.

I'm not too into Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, so I haven't listened to that one in years.

With all due respect, IMHO this relates to what Doug Williams astutely mentioned earlier. Question of taste. This is not only one of my favorite songs?recordings of all time, I love the entire Production too. Incredible harmonies too! Same for "Strangers" and "Death Of A Clown" etc... Chris

IMO, metal did not benefit from the influence of thrash in the mid/late '80s and never recovered - too much emphasis on speed, makes it not heavy.

P.S. Sorry LPE, for whatever reason(s), I wasn't able to "Quote" and add my comments directly BELOW your quoted post-on my Chromebook. Chris Hey Chris...I hear your perspective on Waterloo Sunset. But if we're to take that rationale to it's fullest, every recording has the potential of being great--if only someone thinks it is (the erroneous belief that all art is subjective.) It's true that sometimes "deficient" sounds have a beauty to them that shouldn't be messed with--that's the way I feel about Louie Louie. Other tracks in retrospect could have been better, but the song or performance won the day in spite of poor quality. I too love Waterloo Sunset, but I still say it's beautiful in spite of it's recording (the arrangement itself is great.) And one could make the argument that if it sounded as good as a Beach Boys or Beatles record it may have charted in the US, which sadly it didn't.

So true. BTW if you get a chance... Check out the You Tube video of this song, that includes a Love Scene clip, of the incomparable Julie Christie! Chris P.S. The atypical Beach Boys hit single "Do It Again", also falls within what we're discussing.

This one goes back to the '60's, but it sounds awful. No point waiting for the HD Tracks release. In fact, the Youtube transcription linked sounds particularly terrible. You're gonna want to listen to this analog all the way. But a great song, and a pioneer garage/punk classic. Still love this tune. The Seeds, "Pushin' Too Hard."

That blew my mind when it came out, couldn't get enough of it. Wish it'd continued through the whole song.

Incantation's Onward to Golgotha. It's incredibly muddy and sounds like something went haywire but whatever spazzed out created a huge vibe. Only the original 1990s CD and red LPs have it. The remastered CD and LP reissues are heavily filtered, limited, and sound tiny.

Amanaz is one of my favorite examples of this. Their recordings are wonderful but not technically "good."
Then there's Machina II
