We've had an API 525 at our studio for years and I have NEVER once used it. Was putting together a vocal chain this evening for a client and went down the line of usual suspects. 1176, CL1B, LA2A.
None were exactly "it."
Patched in the 525 and had to figure out what all the little bitty knobs do. What a great sound on this particular vocal. It was perfect.
Wish I had tried it sooner.

Cool!
My experience with the 525 is it either is great and works wonders. Or it never works. The variable ratio with threshold thing is kind of funky. Or whatever it is I can't even remember. I really just never bothered most the time because they never seemed to work way more often than when they do.
But when they do, they sound awesome.

They can be great. Try them one some acoustic guitar. Maybe not bluegrass cross picking but I like them on strummy rhythm.
I just wish they weren’t so damn expensive.
Jeff, make a kit version!!!

Dan, what was the rest of the actual recording chain? Thanks, Chris

Wasn't/isn't that part of Steve Perry's preferred vocal chain?

Maybe they have a plethora of NOS parts.

I like my 525 on acoustic guitars and on the occasional vocal where it just works. My only real beef with them is I tend to use too much of it - and regret that choice the next day. I totally get seduced by its sound. Totally my pilot error - and one you would have though I could learn to overcome. But for whatever reason they sound so good to me while I'm setting it up - only to listen back the next day and think man I squashed the living daylights out of that and I wish I had not.
I've heard plenty of others who are way better at dialing them in make good use of them on acoustic guitars, bass and vocals. Nice sounding compressor imo. For sure worth a try if you already have one in the room.
