Well they refer to it as a system. I kind of think it's some sort of integrated thing. Either some sort of tracking DAW that integrates with Apollos/Console and/or Satellites. Or some new device that allows for the same sort of thing and integrates with Apollos and Satellites. Or maybe both.
Antelope and Apogee have already sort of dipped their toes into those waters with varying degrees of success. I don't think it's a stretch to think that UAD may be going for a more ecosystem type of approach. We'll see.

The tape reels should be a big hint.

The tape reels should be a big hint. Agreed. Though I think that's more a nod to tracking in general versus tape specifically. That is unless they are planning on introducing some sort of new tape "system" or new tape based device?

Tape for recording device or new device with the sound of tape or both: doubt its a tape based medium?

Tape for recording device or new device with the sound of tape or both: doubt its a tape based medium? Agreed. I doubt it's an actual tape based system. The "In collaboration with the masters of pro audio" thing makes me wonder who that might be? I hope it's not Avid. Maybe SSL? Who knows? Edit: I may be reading that wrong. It might be Output saying THEY are collaborating with the "masters of pro audio", in which case that could mean UA. So maybe it is virtual instrument related.

I read it the latter way.

Not just tape, but 2" tape in the teaser clip. My guess is some interface with integrated tape emulation.
Or
The tape thing was just something someone thought was cool and recording related and it's just a MacGuffin.

Cat5 posted this at ua forum thread: Cat5's Avatar Cat5 said: 1 Hour Ago UA Luna “The multitrack-like colored lines and spinning tape reels give this away. It’s not a DAW. This is UA! It’s a AAW. Analog Audio Workstation.
This going to be a UA DSP based DAW with analog summing, complete console emulation, and system-wide tape emulation. Basically a DSP driven mixing and recording environment with end-to-end analog emulation.
This may, or may not include accompanying hardware aside from the existing Apollo and UAD2 products. Maybe making the system serve as a virtual live console as well.
This is just my educated guess, but UA has avoided summing for so long I imagine it’s because they wanted to do a proper implementation at the workstation level.
As much as I don’t think we need more DAWs. This could be cool. Studio One tried to integrate this functionality but the implementation is limited to one system wide plug in and support is very limited. “

If you give me a UA DAW with properly allocated resources and the ability to load in other plugins when needed, I might actually take a dive into the UA world. Seems like cool way for UA to do the Harrison/Acustica style thing.
Oh, and let me choose the desk and gimme the GUI to match!!! I wanna turn me some SSL knobs.

I'm not giving up on Logic after all the years I spent getting used to it. Logic editing features alone makes it hard to replace. Then there's the fact that as cool as some UAD plug-ins are, Logic's compressors sound just as good, many of their virtual instruments sound great, even their new reverb would do fine if I didn't have so many others. Also, I have a boatload of 3rd party plug-ins from companies like Softube, Soundtoys, Slate, Relab, Waves and others, I certainly would want to have access to them regardless of what DAW I use.
Hopefully, whatever they're up to can integrate with all our other gear and plugs. If it's a UAD ecosystem, it could mean having to buy only UAD's plugs to do everything you want, and I doubt anyone here would be up for that.

I am actually looking to get away from UA at least as far as my interface goes. I intend on keeping my satellite however.

A DAW that doesn’t crash? I’m in.

I have no way of knowing for sure, but I'm guessing that whatever sort of DAW solution they're coming up with, assuming that's what they're doing, it will be more like the Harrison Mixbus or Radar.
Use UA's more basic DAW for tracking, seemlessly export to your DAW of choice for more complex moves, and then run it back through the UA DAW/Console at mix time.
That way it still allows you to do all of the more advanced "DAW" sort of things in your DAW of choice (including 3rd party plugins) while still allowing UA to avoid all of the usual support issues that come with supporting a full blown DAW. Sort of like how Radar does things.
Or something like that....

That makes sense Quint.
John, Logic almost never crashes on me since I went i7, Quad core, 32 gig memory. My computer on occasion crashes when not using Logic, so it might even be just a rare but random thing.

I don't use UA interfaces because the built in mixer is totally annoying.
I'm guessing this will be above all some subscription based digital faffing thingy. I'm already yawning!!
FFS build a quality recallable digitally controlled analog console with at least 8 auxes and 12 or more busses. Wait.. that would totally conflict with their (entirely digital) subscription services platform.

@salty Do you mean Console, as it really isn’t a mixer, your daw does that. Console is just the front end to your daw and used just for tracking with ua plug ins.
I have heard only good things about the new X apollos and am curious about what Luna brings to the table.
If only UA would make its used plug in sale model less entrenched and more flexible. It seems somewhat pointless to jump back into UA, I sold everything), but then only but like 10 plug ins.
Drew has started releasing a new series of focused how to videos which are excellent, will help new and experienced users get their head around the UA recording environment.
Whose subscription platform are you referring to ? So far, UA doesn’t have a subscription model.

Yeah, UA doesn't (currently) do subscriptions. I think all the studios that have invested in them would revolt.
This product could be so many things. The DAW type product would mostly be for tracking. Maybe even a portable DSP loaded RADAR type box that allows you to avoid the computer. You can mix however you want later.
One current shot in the dark on this is the UA marketing email said they were "the masters of pro audio" and a Tweet on the profile page for Output says they'll be announcing at NAMM a collaboration with the "masters of pro audio." Since they do synths and loops, it could be something in that vein. Output also makes studio furniture, so they could have something spec built for a UA box.

If Only,......While I respect UA and think they make some good plugins, this is a major reason that led me to sell everything also.

That makes sense Quint. John, Logic almost never crashes on me since I went i7, Quad core, 32 gig memory. My computer on occasion crashes when not using Logic, so it might even be just a rare but random thing. The few times that Logic crashes on me are almost always because of a memory overload. I only have 16 gigs of memory and I use a lot of piggy plug-ins so it's my own fault. The good news is that Logic somehow manages to auto-save whenever it crashes on me. I just re-start, and when I re-open Logic it asks if I want to open it per my last save or auto-saved. I just freeze a few tracks and I'm back up and running smoothly.

I meant the fact that you don't actually own the software, but have a license to use it / transfer it's use. I mean, try selling a UAD plug. It's not easy. "Subscription" is when a customer must pay $ to have use to a product. UAD still owns it (the software). It is a genius model.
