Is back...probably going to pick up the 4 for $399. Capital Chambers, 176 pair...maybe the API. I used the API stuff on some guitars and wasn’t really able to replicate the tone with much of anything else. To me, these plugs are still cream of the crop.

There are several I want, but cash is nil right now. Distressor, Massive Passive, 33609
I have the API Vision channel strip. It depends on the song/source, but I like it a lot on kick and snare for tracking. It certainly adds character.

I have the API EQ's, not the Vision channel strip. Lovely EQ's.

I really wish they could make this system portable. Either a smaller form factor, bus powered octo card, or just full on native with a USB stick.
I'd love to use some of these plugs, but I'm just on the go too much.

I was thinking of upgrading to one of those from my firewire satellite.

Needing to find power, etc. MacBook Pro, ilok, Apogee Groove, and headphones gets the job done.

I have the API EQ's, not the Vision channel strip. Lovely EQ's. I love the 560. Use it a ton. I don't reach for the 550a all that often for whatever reason. I typically go to the 1081 for general purpose stuff. I've been meaning to try doing a mix where I only use 550's on everything though.... just to see how it goes.

The 550 is sort of magic/probably-not-secret special on electric guitars to me for some reason. I am pretty frequently pulling up 550 for electric guitars when I want them to cut through. 560 I pull up on bass pretty often, it seems perfect to get bass to sit in the exact right place. Drums tend to be more SSL strips and Neve strips for whatever reason. Just to sort of go along with what you were saying.

I really like the 560 (or 550) on EG’s. Like more than other EQ plugs or versions. Not sure what it does, but it’s easy to make them sound good with these.

Btw - after hearing the API 550 and CAPI BT50, there’s no way I’m buying an API.

The sliders are the absolute WORST to try and recall. Even running tone through them at the selected frequency you can’t even get close to what you had. I eventually moved to telling engineers they were broken when they would want to patch them in on a mix years ago so I wouldn’t have to deal with the headaches.

I had a 560 for a long time, a favorite for kick drum in particular, and the UA does a good job of replicating it. If I dialed in a sound I liked with hardware I could match it with the plug in really well, although the slider placements didn’t look similar.

The boosts add volume, so maybe that is accounting for why I think the plug sounds so good.

Anyone use the Vari Mu plugin? Been thinking about getting that for a bit and just saw that I can now get it 50% off. I remember Tape Op reviewing it very favorably a while back.

I am using it on my mix bus. I don't know if I have too much comparison, other than trying some options like Ozone. I think the Vari Mu sounds pretty good, so I've stuck with that.

It's pretty impressive. It's a rare occasion that I actually notice the "analog vibe" of an emulation by simply turning it on, but despite having never used a real one, I hear it doing a thing. The input gain seems to have a sweet-spot. I'm not sure if I'll ever fuck with the M/S stuff, but so far I'm digging it on drums and mix buss. Right now I have it on the master, after my TK BC501. Polar opposite action on those.

Vari mu was one of my ua fav’s. I do think about going back but would only be interested in 10-15 plugs, but even with the free sat deal, you still have to re buy the plugs : doable but hard to make the jump back.
