Gonna demo it it later tonight. I’ve got my U87 all set and ready to go.

UA should release a CloudLifter plugin to go with the Avalon and Auto Tune and recommend officially the SM7B, or better yet an SM7B modeling plugin to use with your SM58.

💩 Wow? I didn’t see this one coming...my experience with this piece isn’t very good... Now the AD2022 I’ve had good experience with, but it’s just another mic pre, nothing to really see here...😴

I’d love to see them model the Chandler TG2 preamp personally. They’ve modeled the curvebender, why not a preamp?

I honestly don’t get the hate for these things.
The pre is useable, if kinda boring.
I like the eq/ filters fine.
The compressor is, well, slooooow.
Ok, kinda expensive, blingy, and not particularly exciting. Maybe there are better units at the same or lesser price points now, but at the time it came out there just weren’t that many options.
And yeah, I have one although it’s been out on loan for years now. Would I choose it today over a Daking mic pre/eq and a Fet II ? No, but I dont hate the thing either. Should get it back and see if I’ve changed my mind.
Cheers, Geoff

I hope UA models the 2055 next. Nothing sounds like it and Avalon stopped making it for some baffling reason.

It sounds nice. I’ve never used the real unit, but the plugin reminds me of my Demeter VTMP-2B which I use to tube up FET mics like my U87ai and BLUE Kiwi.

That is absolutely hilarious. But on a side note, my sole 737VT actually sounds great . . . perhaps the NOS re-tubing helped it a lot. As for compressor speed? Slow is good when followed by a FET (76 or Daking) or a quick VCA.

I still think the look is what made it popular in rap circles.

Yeah, the bling factor no doubt helped, but it’s still not a bad bit of kit. It seems to work for that application.
Cheers, Geoff

I guess I’d say I get folks feeling meh about it. But garbage, unusable etc? I disagree with that. Lots of other options now though, so if other stuff works better for your application, go with that. If you can’t get good tracks using the Avalon, I’d say it’s not the Avalon’s fault. I know that is not a universally held opinion.
Cheers, Geoff

Does anyone know what the circuit topology is of the custom Avalon-based console at Sear Sound?
I know that the Avalon 737 gets slagged by some, but everything I've heard that was done on that Sear Avalon console sounds excellent.

I still think the look is what made it popular in rap circles. I knew a couple of producers who bought it and put it in the racks solely to attract hip-hop jobs. Neither of them liked it but said rappers would demand it be used on their vocals. Edit: which is not at all to say that it's a bad piece of gear, I have hardly any experience with it. Just speaks to how much of an aesthetic imprint it had on R&B/hip hop mindsets, sonics aside.

I actually think the UAD platform is perfect for a VT 737 emulation. The neutral character of the original seems like it would be a good match for universal audio’s Apollo preamp platform. Of all the emulations they make, I could see that in theory, this one could lend itself to being pretty close to the original unit. I had an original that I used extensively for 10 years, and although I sold it to buy units that were more colored and saturated, plenty of quality work was made on that original unit. I haven’t had a chance to try this emulation yet, but in my mind, it seems like it should be a great match for the UAD platform. UA has done pretty well with tube emulation, i.e. the V72, so the slight sheen tube sound of a 737 should be easy for them to emulate.

On the recent "Mangle With Care" vocal I did... We used the Avalon and I liked it a lot. I could hear the difference between my Onyx/VTB1 pre's, and my Buddy's Apollo's. Chris P.S. Using my $90 AKG P120 into it, was rather amusing. But we needed no EQ or de-essing For basic tracking!

I had one in the early 2000s. It was crispy...but who knows. Could’ve been the Studio Projects C1 lol

Back then, I especially was THEE wrong (bright) voice for the C1. In the SP line, the CS series and T3 were excellent on me though. Chris

I used an SP B1 for a long time. The AT3035 was my main vocal mic though. The B1 usually got used for instruments. Did a LOT of recording with those two mics, a 58, and an RE11.
