Anyone compare these two side by side?
Looking for a nice stereo bus / general purpose compressor with lots of tone. TG-1 has been on my wish list for a while, but only really based on it's history and general positive status. Haven't heard one in person.
Not really looking for a cheaper clone here, but those 2 specific units.

I haven't heard the TG1 either, although it's also on my GAS-list. I have, however, heard the original at Abbey Road and loved it. I own the AML and love it on vocals, drums, bass, but I don't use it on the mixbus, I have a Manley VariMu parked there. Funny enough, the mastering guy at Abbey Road ultimately also used a VariMu over the TG comp. I know the 2254 is a bus compressor on those lovely old Neve consoles, maybe I should try the 54F50 in that role. I love the creamy compression of the AML, you can smash it a lot and it still sounds great. I recommend it if you love the Neve vibe.

I have pretty limited (har har) experience with the TG1, but I've slowly been getting to know it. The tracking space I use has one, and I park it on room mics. It is definitely a tone box. One of the few I've used where it instantly hits you that something is different by just running through it. Based on my experience the compression behavior would likely be, as my mom would say, "a bit much" as a general purpose mixbuss compressor, but on subgroups or drums, or a vocal (I've tried this too, and it's pretty sick).... totally rad.

Also considering the IGS V8 which looks interesting and in this compressor type...

After trying all sorts of SSL and other stuff, it's the clear winner in my book.

Mind you, the VariMu is the first comp in my mix chain. The last comp in the chain is a TK Audio BC-1S, which is basically an SSL bus comp. I love some SSL flavor for mixing, that's why I also sum through an X-Desk and X-Panda. For tracking, I use a bunch of BAE Neve clones.

The AML 54f50 is a very nice comp - I have a pair here. It sounds amazing on individual sources and I like it quite a bit on drum bus as well. The only time I would use it on the Master buss is if I had a recording that I wanted to make sound really old school with obvious compression sound, or something like a rock recording that I want to impart a lot of vibe on. Generally speaking, I find that it excels on most any individual source and drums. I haven’t tried the TG2 so I can’t comment on that comparison. I do love Chandler‘s gear though, every piece I’ve tried or own is excellent. But I absolutely love the 54f50 and use it a lot

I guess I’m kind of realizing myself some SSL (and/or API style buss compression) before or after a MU is pretty great for mixdown. The SSL controls things whereas the MU really gets all the tone and flavor.

I wouldn't recommend the use of either of the units mentioned in the title for 2BUSS unless you were really going for an old-school, heavy-handed thing - but to each their own! The combo of MU + VCA on 2BUSS is where it's at. Although, our D-COMP DOES sound amazing on 2BUSS when I want more color and a bit more "dramatics" out of the 2BUSS. Otherwise, the BUSS COMP lives there with another on DRUM BUSS ;-) Occasionally we will also run a pair of V-COMPs in BYPASS (just using the tube line amp) before or after the BUSS COMP for some amazing depth and slight "grit"...
