Echoing what others have said: Tokyo Dawn for utility needs, Fuse for more esoteric hardware models, a good Liquidsonic verb for lush sound, the Exponential Verbs while they’re $9 each right now for Swiss Army Knife verbs, Valhalla for Delay, and that covers most applications right there. If you really like the SSL sound, add BX Console E or G for $29 or lower when it’s on sale.

I think Slate got out over his skis on the promises. Developing stuff is expensive and getting people on the rental and then partnering with devs who've already come up with stuff seems to be the focus. Slate itself did the LA-2a this last year-ish. Have they developed any other plugins recently?
And who knows, maybe the rental and lots of partnerships are the way to go, from a business perspective.

I agree and losing things like the Relab LX480 were a bummer and part of what made me bail on the subscription model. That’s an advantage Plugin Alliance has, they only add new plugins and haven’t dropped any to my knowledge. Having said all that, I’m sub free now 🤣

I don’t mean to be so negative sounding about Slate. Their (and his) marketing style is not my cup of tea, and I think the style is perhaps indicative of other issues. I’ll leave it at that. And actually, they’ve released at least 3 major things this year of their own: the headphone thing, the “Mo-“ plug (can’t remember the name off the top of my head), and that new tuning plugin. I’ve heard good things about the headphones from people who’ve used them (including donr), I have no idea what the Mo-plug is, and while I haven’t heard the tuning plugin, I bet it’s really good. Having an alternative to Antares can only be a good thing. But I cannot imagine ever going back to that subscription.

Having an alternative to Antares can only be a good thing. But I cannot imagine ever going back to that subscription. The MO-TT plug is basically a multipressor. The tuning plug is of the set and perform variety. It works well, for what it is, but I have no use for it. I prefer to go in and tweak things one note at a time. Murda Melodies (I think that's what it's called) is essentially a sexy collection of one-knob effects. There's doubling/widening plug that uses an x/y coordinate matrix to set. It's also pretty sexy, but sounds horrible to me. Of the above, the MO-TT is usable, sounds good and I'm actually finding it easy to work with. Nonetheless, I'm still looking forward to the day when I can drop the subscription.

I don’t regret quitting the subscription, that’s for sure. As stated before I owned some of the plugs outright so I still have and use a few of them, but I find myself veering away from most of them, mostly because my workflow has organically pushed me in other directions.
As far as subscriptions go, at some point I had to ask myself, do I need all these fancy new plugins? Will they make my music better? The answer was no.
