Greetings.
In your experience, which headphones provide the best isolation when tracking?
TIA, -09

The Vic Firth headphones are the most isolating pair I have, don't sound the best and clamp your head like a vice but they work great as intended.

Yeah, I am currently using the 7506 and pretty happy with them, but just wondering if there is something with better isolation. That doesn't feel like a head vice. Thanks for the replies; keep them coming!

I have a pair of BeyerDynamic 770 as well, I can't really say if they have better isolation or not, the probably do. However, they require more power to drive them, so that's a slight minus.

Direct sound EX-25. They redid the drivers a while ago and sound much better. Looks like they just redid the whole line again and added the pro designation. The 25's have a more rounded earcup and are more comfortable for long periods. The 29's have better isolation but are like clamps on your ears if they don't fit inside the pads.
One thing I did was to line the inside of the earcups with conduit putty, provided more dampening and isolation.
One great part is that they supply all the parts to repair them.

That was when I learned they updated the drivers!

I’ve been using 3x Direct Sound Studio+ in my studio, which are more pricy than the 29s but offer ~3dB less isolation. I believe they use the same updated drivers. When I asked Direct Sound about the difference, they said these are the best sounding of the line, and while clients are usually happy with how they sound, to me they sound boxy and need a lot of mid attenuation and high boost EQ to sound balanced. Compared to my Beyerdynamic DT-770s, the Studio+ sound like crap. That being said, headphone bleed rarely is a problem, and they double as great headphones + hearing protection while drumming.

Yes, Direct Sound EX-29 and its newer version. I have 3 pairs and I've used them for years for drum and vocal tracking, they lack a bit in the top end, but I don't mind for tracking. As Bram said, the Studio+ sound terrible, I got them for free in a replacement deal a while ago, but I never use them. The EX-29, however are great.

In-ears. I have some of the mid level Shure in-ears with the small foam pads and they work better than any on-head headphones for isolation.

Will second the Shure in-ears. You could also use over it industrial ears muffs for additional 25-30dB of isolation.

I went with them over the 29s because the company rep said they sound better. 🧐

The $15 numbers from Mono-price. And you don't have to worry about drummers or musicians (yes that's a joke) breaking them! They sounds completely acceptable and are midrange heavy which is great for carrying a click without worrying about it bleeding.
FIFTEEN dollars. Cheap and effective.

I should also add that the isolation 'phones I've used give me a headache something awful. They're way too tight for any kind of lengthy session.

You should remember the sound leaks not only through the ears, but also through your skull, and even nose passages. To get an ultimate isolation you might want to use something like this and remember to attach it pretty tight😂😂😂:

I found the Studio+ to be more dull, less top end and flat sounding (boring) compared to the EX-29, which doesn't sound too top heavy in the first place. BTW, I recommend the newer EX-29 Plus, which sound better then the EX-29. Then again, take my opinion with a grain of salt, my hearing is pretty much shot after 50 years of rock'n'roll abuse...

BTW; I was interested in the wireless version and, while it sounded good, its latency made it pretty useless in recording situations. I wish Direct Sound would find a solution...

Uhh, yeah, I had some Vic Firth, too. They really turned the rest of the world off, but unbelievably uncomfortable to wear, guaranteed headache after a while. THIS is where I am really glad, that we have In-Ear alternatives in the meanwhile. Invaluable for this...

Has anybody tried the Telefunken branded variety? The rep said they’re the same as the current gen direct sound branded.

We’ve been bamboozled! So the Studio+ have 3.3db less isolation, sound worse, and are $30 more expensive. I wonder what the target demo is for it, is the upgrade supposed to be cosmetic? Whatever the case, I’d like to hear the 29 Plus now.

Check them out, if you can. I also like the fact that the cable on the Plus can be detached. I step on it all the time while recording and it's great that the cans are not constantly yanked off my ears.

Phones with THE BEST isolation?
No contest - David Clark phones built for helicopter pilots.
Incredible isolation. Unfortunately, not very incredible sound....
I'd like to see somebody swap out the drivers for something decent.
