I've long said that one of the biggest mistakes musicians make when they start recording is to think of compressors as "musical dynamic" control. That's too MACRO for electronic compression. While some of that kind of happens as a side effect, usually by the time that side effect happens, you've fucked the sound hard. And the idea that "good players/singers" don't need compression...is an extension of that misunderstanding. Nothing Lee Sklar's fingers can do will shape the attack on his bass the way a VCA compressor will. No amazing singing technique makes every lyric audible and low level expressive details NOT masked by the 15 tracks of layered guitar and keys.
An attempt to "fix" poor musical dynamics with engineering level dynamics processing will typically end up in a big audio fidelity fail, IMO. At best, you end up with a really pumpy distorted recording that will ironically be impossible to make LOUD in mastering for all the electrical (micro) dynamics that you MAKING with all your dynamics processing used incorrectly.

Just read an overview of a new compressor from TKaudio. He says it's designed to add extra THD and you can use it either for stereo bus or mono channels.
