Going to a good Buddy's dinner party tomorrow evening, he was a very close "College Chum" of Brian (including Smile era). I'll ask for more stories... Chris P.S. I'm giving him my MXL V87 "complete" as a gift (nice mic actually/fairly U87-ish)

Great way to meet girls then. His biggest regret (musically), is missing Hendrix playing in the local London clubs. He booked Pink Floyd, when Syd was in the band! Chris

Related note: when I demo'd Ampltiube this last time, I thought they had such a nice Super...and that Marshall Major was killer-as was maybe some Appetite For Destruction Slash thing....and....then when I got to the AC30 models, which I think was under like "Legacy" or something....I thought "wow...that's not equal quality"....so, if this may be a genius way to brings three different AC30 models into the new HD engine.

I agree - AT4 doesn't get it's due in the market.

Wanted to try it, but I can't get my Custom Shop to update. I download the client, run it and it just keeps giving me the message that I need to download the new client. Then I can't even log in...not recognizing any of my known passwords...tried to change the PW but the email never came. Good work, IK

Not too familiar with Amplitude. Do you need to buy a platform product before you buy the Brian May product?
I have been looking for a good AC30 sim for a while now.

Always sounds too ice pick high end. Love AC30s, but I frequently can not track a full band in my space without detrimental bleed in the drum mics. Just trying to avoid that with a sim that inspires the same feeling. It can be overdubbed or reamped if necessary later.

So, my experience is icepicks are usually the speaker with analog tube amps. And if it's ice picks in recording, SM57 can accentuate the range of "harsh". 57s are actually best for fairly dull vintage amps....IME, but I digress....
An AC15 isn't a 15 wt AC30....it's got a 1x12 vs 2x12 in a smaller box....amd IME cutting wattage in half means the LF mostly disappear (relative to the 30)--which might lead to simply sounding "brighter" for people who hear "bright" as top without bottom....the AC30 would bring the bottom.

popmann do you own or have you owned any AC15s or AC30s for any lengthy time period? I've had a 1972 AC30 1974 AC30 and 1980 AC30 reverb, a 1980 AC15 and others wince about 1981. I've never met amps more tonally dependent on speaker choice. EDIT P.S. Not meant to sound harsh at all, by the way, just wondering about your experience with this amp type. I'm always open to learn something!

Nope. Way too loud. I do own a custom el84 that is just an ac 30’s and 15’s power sections. (Switchable) it has more of a Marshall preamp, trainwreck master....its a bastard.
But my comment about icepicks was about guitar amps in general. If you say that ac15 connected to your ac30 cab is icepicky, I believe you. Youve plugged it into other cabs? Replaced the speaker in it?

The 12" Tone Tubby Alnico 'Chicago Blues' is far and away the best speaker I've ever heard with any Vox amp I have silver backs, green backs, blue backs/bull dogs, cream backs, vintage 30s, heritage 30s, and the usual G70-80 and all the Fender Jensen speakers and Eminence etc/ . Plus the old Fanes and Wharfdales

Not too familiar with Amplitude. Do you need to buy a platform product before you buy the Brian May product? I have been looking for a good AC30 sim for a while now. As I understand it, Brian May's AC30 is pretty heavily modified. Vox made a limited edition tribute version of it - no tone controls.
My friend Jim Chen who runs Audio Images Corportation in SF knows those guys - he's backstage every time they hit SF. He had a Brian May AC30 in for awhile. Dunno if he sold it to a customer or kept it for himself....?

IIRC, a lot of Brian's sound has to do with he uses a coin as a pick?

Gave this thing a little spin. Interesting if you're looking for an insight into Brian's setup, a lot of different tones/textures there. The amps sound pretty good, the little Deacy amp was a surprise.

Scholz didn't use the Rockman stuff until later, at least not for the first 2.
