I look at it this way. How many recordings made though original Neve 1073’s were made without using the EQ? I would think very few. Therefore if you are looking to buy a 1073 because of its heritage/sound etc why would you buy 1073 without EQ? It kind of doesn’t make sense. Even more so in the case of a 1084. my take on it like this. i see where u coming from that all records had the EQ in it. im sure a lot more gear was used alongside the 73s. but my situation is a bit different, times are different. i need it for tracking and EQ is not needed cause i dont mix, and will have a pro do it. but unless by having a (bypassed) EQ inline the sound becomes "so desirable" that i will be missing out, otherwise its a waste. with Preamp version only, its kinda like neve 1290 right? from what im reading here is that its not necessarily better, but a bit different maybe cause all of the extra EQ circutory it goes through when when not engaged.. i guess i have to hear it myself to make that call.. i also thought about adding newer EQ after the preamp, like 551, or 5033, how it would effect the sound, improve or degrades by adding more stuff. i dont know.

Any comparison clips yet? Still would like to hear Sorry, I haven't gotten around to it yet. I've been busy with work and mixing, lately, and then also had to rearrange my rack to accomodate a new compressor (Kush Tweaker). Hopefully I'll be recording some more in the next few weeks and I can give it a try. I may also throw in a couple other preamps. I was also debating exactly how to do this. I want the same performance but also to use mics because running line signal through is not the same thing as using these as actual mic pres. I guess I'll use a looper to feed an amp. no worries, cant wait to hear. thank you

A 1073 has an EQ. Period. And it does affect the sound. How much, how different non-EQ versions sound, etc. and how much of a difference it makes is up to you and your personal esthetic. But 1073's - real ones or legit clones - all have EQ's. It's a part of it's "thing". Yes, definitely listen for yourself!! You may not need the EQ! <thumbsup>

You may end up liking the "non-perfect" and "compromised" clone BETTER than the exact replica. Although we tend to view the original as "best", it may not always be so. For instance, tracking on a Neve 80 series console brings a lot of low mid mud into the equation that is not necessarily good. More modern Neve variants might actually be better after 20 overdubs than a true vintage replica. I know...heresy right?

Full on 1073 clone? Awesome, those are cool.
Great Neve style preamp into a 550A, quite often more useful in my world.

I’d be real curious what the dB level of the sum would be.

In that case I may prefer the preamp only version. You can still push the transformers for more color. Well see, I'm speculating this maybe extremely subtle in sound, Can't wait. I mean even the clones sound different from each other

I think you’re over thinking it. A great preamp is a great preamp. Sure the 1073 will sound different with and without the eq, but remember that a stand alone Neve preamp isn’t going to sound like a console anyway. The console sound that so many of us are chasing is the sum of many parts. Preamp, line amps, summing amps, tape machine (or daw), back into the console and through a whole other set of line amps etc etc. So really neither version of the 1073 is the “whole” sound, just part of it...a very pleasing part of it.
I say get what pleases your aesthetic and try not to obsess...I know that’s easier said than done 😄
