Gonna pull the trigger on an LDC tube mic soon. My vocalist is not quite a tenor but he is not a low-range lounge singer either. He has a unique delivery style (part Elvis, part Bono, part psycho) and I want to capture what he has to offer, so a well-controlled proximity effect would be nice, as well as that elusive "silk" tone in the mid/upper register. Excessive sibilance is always a concern, so I am thinking that I might want to avoid the Chinese clones, unless there is a great value available (CV4+mod ?). Ideally, I want to buy one "heirloom" mic and be done with it if all all possible. I am currently tracking him with a chain of AT 4050 > Ventura > Dragon > Apollo; the AT is an OK mic but we are putting a lot of effort into our project and I want to invest in our creative energy.
Unfortunately, I cannot spend 10K+ on a vintage U47. Too many other places to put that amount of scratch.

hey matt, what is your budget, and are you considering a diy U47 clone? i can lead you in an awesome direction for that, also if your ever around San Diego, your welcome to come by and test out my Mk47 U47 clone, it's a replica circuit with two 408 tubes substituting and splitting the vf14's duties, I put a Thiersch M7 pvc capsule in it, and it is a serious piece! I paid around $1,000 for it top to bottom.

I will consider it.

Check this thread out, www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=41379.msg513821#msg513821 there are a lot of donor bodies that are available for it, some spitting clones of the original, some really close, and some that just work with no frills. prices apply accordingly for those. It's a great option if you have the gumption?

I'm just going to suggest a Gefell UM70s, preferably one of the later models before they went to the UMT70S, maybe one of the Mercenary reissues they made. I got one for about 1200$ and it's simply kicking everything else I own(besides the other Gefells I own) to the curb. I can't tell you how much I love this thing. Gefell in general are just head and shoulders above most everything else made these days in terms of build quality and performance for the price. If I had the scratch, I'd opt for something higher up in their lineup as well.

Check out Carhedral Pipes. Just google them or You Tube. They've got a serious contender. It's a bit flashy but sounds great.

I agree, the mic sounds good on the YouTube vid I watched (for what that's worth), and if Butch Vig likes the line (specifically the Notre Dame), something pretty good must be going on. Butch called out the ND on the "what vocal mic did you use today" thread over on GS. I'm not sure I dig the pimpish LED light, but I suppose it could be removed or even painted over with nail polish. Black nail polish. But who knows, I might like it. Get a red light and get the bordello effect going during vocal takes. Anything to make the vibe right.

Flea also has s cheaper cart only version of the 47 now as well. I seldom use omni on my tube condensers anyway so I'm sure it would do for a vocal mic.

Cowboy has the UM17R with the Theirsch cap...I think. He speaks highly of it. I think it's based more on the 49, though...not that thick, mid rangey 47 sound. The Wunder CM7GTS would be a great contender if you're looking for the 47 sound. I just listened to some files I did when I owned the CM7-GT - and it sounds like a 47...I was actually surprised at how much it had that classic sound - I think I was too close to it at the time to realize...

I didn't have a great experience with the CM7-GT, I think I had the K-47 cap. Something peaky in the 2.5-3.5 range always bothered me.

Well, me too...I had the GT with the M7 & k47 AND the CM7...and it always felt a little "bitey" in that area. BUT - when I go back and listen to some of those tracks - there it is - sounds like a 47. Sometimes, I get anal about something and lose the forest for the trees. My biggest issue was that it was going to be my main vocal mic, so I had to be happy...It might have been the bomb on almost everything else. Anyway, Mike says there have been improvements made since...
Sal, didn't you try out the CM67? What was the consensus?

haven't tried the cm67... i was waiting for the flea 67 which was supposed to come out LAST summer, so Flea told me. Anyhow, since i got a u67 it's a moot point for me now. I sold 3 other mics to get the u67 and am happy as a clam.

u just gotta buy more stuff so u can sell more stuff so u can buy more stuff. wait... is this the gear addiction thread? My problem is compounded by the fact that I am a buyer only, and never sell anything. How else does someone end up with 9 Marshall heads? And a Soldano SLO100, and a Cameron CCV, collecting dust. And eight Historic Les Pauls, all sunbursts, five of them collecting dust that fails to fall on my amp heads. And twelve 4x12 cabinets, all bought for an imaginary World Tour that somehow was never booked. I'm sure some shrink would say that I'm obsessive-compulsive. Maybe, maybe not. Depends on what the definition of the word is, is. Right now I'm drumming up the courage to post something in Classifieds. Maybe. We'll see. Oops, wrong thread. I need to buy a U47-ish mic.

I dont really want to build the PSU, but I would be up for the rest.... I see Hamptone and Korby have them available.. i need to look into it more. cheers Wiz

matt what ever came of your u47 hunt? Did you go DIY, Flea or other? Cathedral Pipes Notre Dame. Sounds great to me, and also to anyone who hears it. Good, smooth low end and sweet mids/highs. It's my go-to vocal mic, for sure. And the white LED inside the body is not obnoxious at all and is hardly noticed.
