Normally I would recommend that you move to where it's legal, but it looks like Australia is pretty lax about enforcing pot laws and that legalization is around the corner. Sorry, don't know much about banjos.

Deering makes a good one.

Yeah, Deering has a good rep for journeyman quality banjos that won't break the bank and they do have a 6 string model.

I've had a few. So far, the best that I've owned is the Recording King. Well built. I wish it had a brass tone ring, but it sounds very good anyway.

I thought these things were called gitjos? Australians say Ganjo. I'm also seeing a lot of people using Banjitar.

I've got a Banjitar - do they make "good" ones? I should pull mine out - i don't even know how to tune the banjo part of it. I guess I'm about to go down a Youtube rabbit hole...
Mine's from SX, and has a great feeling (I know, right?) neck like an SG, and it sounds like a banjo! Sweet star inlays too. A guy I know around here on the east coast, he put a little piezo on it and does some cool stuff with it.

Problem with mandolin is sharpening your fingers in the pencil sharpener....
