I talked to Wes Dooley about making a video about using his R92 mics on toms. That could be fun.
The Sputnik party was crazy. I've never seen it that crowded. I may have had a bit too much whiskey.
Carl Tatz showed me his new monitors and the latest Phantom Focus system. It was really impressive. Ruler flat response and the phase plot was perfect. I had never seen or heard anything like it.
On Friday I got to do a mix demo at NAMM, but for some reason half of the plug-ins refused to authorize once we got the computer set up on stage even though it worked perfectly 20 min earlier off to the side of the stage. Frustrating, but I got through it.
I tried talking to a dude with a YouTube channel I like that's all about gear and recording techniques. He treated me like I was some kind of annoying fan-boy which I found equally annoying and amusing. Being YouTube famous is cool.
I ran into Larry Crane from Tape Op at 3 Crow Bar last night and we sat talking about the old days when I lived in Portland and we worked together and helped each other out on projects and with our studios. He's such a good guy.
I went over to the RobotLemon party and watched Pete Lyman and Reid Shippen record a bluegrass band live to disk. The other people in the control room were Ray Kennedy, Dave Kalmusky, Ryan Hewitt, Vance Powell, Ted Jensen and Jaquire King. None of them are YouTube famous though.

I missed it all...wife scheduled a family get-together on of all weeks - NAMM week. Needed a break from it, though, so it was good. Heard Jeff's thing was really cool...and hear Joel played great.

Most of what they "output" is immanently flushable.

My favorite piece of gear there was a tambourine: Of course, no one was at the booth haha. I didn’t get to spend much time there and had sessions all weekend and Friday evening so I didn’t get to go to any of the party events. Tried to talk to AEA, but got bombarded by a woman and couldn’t escape for 20 minutes. Had a nice conversation with the Vanguard Audio guys, the stereo microphone is really nicely built and I’m excited to actually hear it. I was hoping that Audio-Technica would be there because I wanted to check out the AT5045...maybe weasel my way into a deal on some headphones. But, I’m terrible at talking “game”. Maybe I need a YouTube channel I also wanted to talk to AES about doing something at MTSU or a similar school about recording bluegrass. It’s funny, when I went there, we weren’t allowed to record bluegrass projects because they were too “live” and they wanted us to spread our projects outs like “drum day, guitar day, vocal day” which honestly I’ve never done professionally. But, bluegrass has really paid for my life and it’s honestly one of the few genres where you actually need a studio if you want record a 5 or 6 piece band live. It just doesn’t work piecing it together to a click instrument by instrument (for me anyway). So, it be fun to get a band of great musicians together and cut some stuff with students. Maybe show how to do it live with no headphones...

Carl Jackson was killing it and Val's version of Ghost of a Chance was mesmerizing.

I was able to hang out with Warren "Marvelous" Huart and Jack Douglas, for the better part of an hour...
We had a blast, and (of course) I had to kid with Warren, on the whole Marvelous thang. They're both super cool, in my book. Jack has that "dry wit" style BTW. Chris

I've never been to NAMM but usually there are so many videos on YouTube you pretty much get the low down on notable released products. Not so much for this edition. Most of the videos I found were talking about guitar stuff, which is fine (I play guitar), but I'm at the point where I'm more interested in studio gear. Warren Huart had one super long video and he talked to a few interesting people, but even in his video I had already seen some of the products at past NAMM's. Paul Wolf was one guy who seems to be designing for all kinds of companies. If I was going to invest in a console I might look at his Fix brand. That new Kemper Stage Profiler looks pretty cool. I might actually try to get one of those in the future. Heard about the party with Reid and the bluegrass band. Those are the experiences I think I'd enjoy the trip for more. Hey, lordalvin, I've been researching the R92 since you posted about that, and I came across a GS post from a couple years ago where Paul Godfrey from Morcheeba says the R92 is his favorite snare mic, pretty much because he gets no bleed from the hi hat. Need to get some funds together and get that mic!

Thought about going down and trail my old buddy Ed, but realized that would be fun for 15 minutes, then I'd get annoyed by the crowds, schmoozing and irritating small talk. I'm fun at parties.
Unfortunately GS didn't put up a thread for makers to post their new sh!t in, but I did see on Instagram where Locomotive has a new product called the Copperline that looks interesting. MostlyI'd like external phantom power to front a couple Coil CA70's on that occasion I use an actual condenser (rare!) and the ability to change the mic characteristics by starving the voltage or actually giving it what it needs appeals to my sense of taking good sound and crossing the border with it. Attenuation is a bonus.

I'd like to buy Larry Crane a beer one day. He's like the Charles Osgood from the Sunday Morning News show of the Recording Industry for me.

I believe Coil Audio makes a phantom power box. If memory serves, they say it can improve the sound on most FET mics.

PS - I FREAKING LOVE companies that put out products that are forward thinking and which don't clone the myriads of versions of classic pieces.....

Yeah Eric!!!!!!! Thinking outside the box again!!! Put me down for one! He's really setting the standard on how to run a boutique gear company--well-built, beautiful pieces that don't break the bank. And he doesn't have to get online every week and apologize for not delivering on his promises.

Got a chance to hear the Heiserman tube mic into a vp28 platinum(and all the other capi pres in a switcher) and it sounded fabulous! The new Berg Mic was lovely as well... The useful Arts DI had a very nice eq section for bass. Also Norm from Atomic Instrument had his new dual 10 inch nearfields for review and I was quite impressed. Ate and drank too much!

The Berg mic looks fantastic, but $6,000? I can almost get a pair of Heiserman mics for that price! I looked around for Norm from Atomic because I wanted to hear the new 2610's, but I didn't see him. I have the original Atomic Instrument 610's in my studio and I love them.

The Berg was very nice but subjectively in cans in unfavorable listening conditions I preferred the Heiserman by quite a bit.... I will be getting a pair for sure! Norm was over at the shoebox sat eve so I stopped by and scoped the 2610. I still prefer the 610s slightly based on memory but the headroom was insane on the new ones. I feel I still have to give the win to my Dutch & Dutch 8Cs because of the Cardioid and active room correction but Norm is a great builder. I will probably get a pair of 610 for the travel rig.
