I don’t have a ton of experience with the modern 414s but was surprised that it had more presence than a C12! All those mics worked well in the mix towards the end. Nice job on the new mic Austrian Audio. the cheaper mic has surely closed the gap with higher end microphones nowadays. i dont see a need to spend 4-5grand anymore like a decade ago.

I couldn't watch the video for more than about 2 seconds... sorry... I'll wait for the next one. Why is that? The singing style was making me feel homicidal.

Really helpful video. At a first quick glance the AA sounded closer to the C 12 but a bit more forward sounding and the tube C12 a bit smoother. But I’m not someone that’s spent a lot of time with a C12 or 414. If anyone here uses them regularly I’d love to hear their thoughts, keeping in mind that the goal is NOT to make a perfect clone. AA mentioned other products to come—wouldn’t be surprised if it’s their “C12.” Is B&H Photo their only US distributor? Great company but they NEVER have sales. I’ll have to check Thomman etc.

It's a 414-TLII which is NOT the same thing as a standard 414-EB/ULS/etc, it's a hyped bright version. I'm not sure that's really the right 414 to compare. They claim 'C12 inspired' in the TLII: recordinghacks.com/pdf/akg/C414B-TLII-datasheet.pdfThe standard is flatter, it would seem the AA is more appropriately compared to the EB/ULS/etc, though it's still brighter than that actual C12. recordinghacks.com/pdf/akg/C414EB-manual.pdfStill useful to hear all 3 of those together.

The singing style was making me feel homicidal. I don't love the track either, but it really makes me focus on the sound of the mics and not get swept up in the music. If Chris Stapleton demoed new mics we'd just end up buying everything and going broke!

Behringer will soon be coming out with the competing Faustrian LDC series!
Consumers will be at a crossroads then, choosing between all these choices... Chris
P.S. I was able to pick out TLM 103, in the last video. IMHO a little harsh, on her voice. The AKG and Austrian Audio were both noticeably smoother. BTW I like the 414 XLS' tone generally (gasp!).

Great time to do music. All this top notch technology coming out for home recording at a price point never possible before
