Ok, I’m sitting on a train and I’m bored.
So, the premise is, 3 compressors. And three compressors only. Is all your studio can have. Can be for tracking and/or mix. Or both. We can pretend that the reasons are budgetary, space, whatever. I will give a little leeway in that one of them can be a stereo unit, or a pair of mono units (so in the latter case four).
Lets also so these units are attainable and available even for those of relatively modest means. But now with Stam making a Fairchild, and Compex and 33609 derived stuff now available most of the classic stuff is available in some guise so I don’t really see that as being a real limitation for most stuff.
Do you go with the classics? 1176, La2a, modern Swiss Army knife like Distressors, more transparent, or vibe all the way?
ok, I’ll start with a Cranesong Trakker. Swiss Army knife that can get somewhat vibey but can do gobs of transparent gain reduction and hard to make sound bad. Can be done, but hard. Pair of Daking Fet IIs. Again a bit Swiss Army knife and really hard to make sound bad. Third one? Something gooey that can add heft in a way the above don’t really do. Maybe something in a vari-mu?
ok, interested to hear what you guys might choose.
Cheers, Geoff

That Stam is a good choice if you want an 1176. Three flavours in one box. The Cranesong and the Daking are both supposed to be 1176ish at certain settings but I don’t really hear them that way although I’ve never tried to match them either.

Manley Vari-Mu (stereo), Serpent SA3a (stereo), Splice (I'd be happy if this could be a unit stereo too, but it's OK - I still want the mono one anyway.)

1176 LA2A (modified with Jensen transformers, 12AY7 input tube, and Kenetek T4B)
I don't NEED a third one as far as hardware goes. Maybe a CL1B? Otherwise, I'm in the box with FabFilter after that.

Audioscape ssl, stam adg and Audioscape V comp. I’d probably do this too. What’s the budget? I’d probably trade the V-comp for a Stamchild, depending. Also, a Foote P3EX (or P4DMS) instead of SSL might be cool. A Buzz SOC20 for optical sound if you don’t want Vari-Mu.

I'd get three Distressors! Oh yeah, Distressor! Very versatile.

Though I’m thinking of selling my pair in lieu of the UAD Distressor plugin I just picked up. Maybe that’s something to consider. Buying pieces that there is no good plugin counterpart of. I’ve been thinking about that lately.

Lots of different approaches so far.
Keep em coming. Not like we’re holding you to it.

I can only keep 3 of them? OK . . . it's tough but here goes.
CL1b D-Comp (@audioscapes) or soon the V-Comp 1176 Bluestripe. Pro replicas.
Thank God I still have all my channel strips. LOL !

I'd get three Distressors! I’m surprised by your answer, Bob! I thought you were an LA3A kinda guy. Lucas

My LA3as are what they are. I like them for vocals and bass. Unfortunately, the new ones were a profound disappointment. Not as big as the new LA2as but...

Stereo Pye, Gates SA-39, BA-6a Very nice, but what if you could only choose three that are currently in production?

One of whatever FCS is making today. Usually a stereo unit with one set of controls. I have both the CAPI FC526 and Distressors, I'd probably land on the FC526 for the basic tone of it, ignoring feature set differences. The 'zingy' tone of the Distressor bothers me on certain sources. You could put a mix into FC526's (if you could link them) and I haven't heard an 1176 on a full mix I've liked yet. All my vari-mu are old, and I haven't heard the majority of what's currently made. The Manley I have used didn't impress me compared to the old classics. Not sure what #3 would be, or if I even would want it to be a vari-mu. Maybe an optical; no complaints about my Langevin ELOP.
