Gotta be one of the dumbest threads I’ve ever started, but screw it. I’m on the fence about pulling the trigger on an Upton 251, but it means I gotta give up a 67 from my pair. I’ve got a 47 (clone) in my locker as well as a pair of KM84’s and a pair of Warbler 49ish LDC’s.
Thoughts?

I like pairs of things...I think a pair of 67’s would get used a lot more on instruments than a single. Seems more useful to have 2

Dunno, my eyes kinda glaze over. Do you know you have a need for a 251? Is there a thing you are attached to with a pair of 67's you'll miss?
I'm personally having a lot of moments lately as I work on my building that vacillate between 'everything's F'd', and 'I've been working in this space 21 years already, and it's been mostly fine'. Same seems to go for whether or not I need any new gear.....it means I've done without it for 25+ years......

Pairs are pretty powerful. I’ve been itching for a 67 and also been itching for a quality 251, but may end up with a 2nd FleA 49 first due to how much you can do with a solid pair of microphones that you know, and because Emily and I like to just record duets together. It’s amazing how quickly we can record things that way.

Before you let go.. try the 67s as stereo room mics in ORTF and spaced pair at least 10-15 feet away from the kit or solo instrument. See if you can get the same thing with another pair or mono. Drums overheads too I guess. Man, so many things I’d try before letting go.

67's are to my ears, the ultimate room mics. Granted, I haven't used them that way myself, but from hearing different tracks and comparisons, they're just the thing a certain type of recording needs. But, it's an incredible luxury for most of us. No wonder people still use studios. Doing a recording with great mics like vintage U67's as room mics is an important part of what made some classic recordings classic IMO.
So the answer isn't too difficult indiehouse, if you need a 251 sound for variety to fit clients, then get one, but if you can actually use 67's as room mics, then you're in a rare and wonderful predicament.
I'm waiting on the new Stam Audio SA67 with the Tim Campbell capsule. I'm very 67 compatible, and hopefully that will do it. I have the Soyuz 0-19 FET, which is a great mic, similar to what a U87 is used for. I happen to have a couple of nice Avantone mics. Their BV-12 has a bit of that smoothness a C-12 has. I've found it's great on voice-overs and guided meditations I've been recording for friends lately. I might eventually have it modded with a Tim Campbell capsule to have a bit of the C-12/251 style tone available.
It must be really nice to be able to use two U67's for recording a solo singer/songwriter if you like.

Things are in flux for me right now, and I’m not doing as much drum tracking as I have been. Mainly vocal/guitar production, seems to be morphing into an overdub/mixing studio setup.

Is there something you think you’re missbig out on by not having a 251?
I’ve been lucky enough to use most every holy grail microphone with the exception of a 251, so I’m admittedly pretty ignorant of what they can do. I have used 2 C12’s and a C24 and would definitely pick a pair of 67’s over those mics.

You could try for a cheaper 251. Stam just announced his. Signal Art’s isn’t as expensive as the Upton.

If they are authentic Neumann U67s, you would be losing your investment by selling for a mic of lesser longterm value.
If it’s a clone...send it out the door!

Keep the 67s. You can make a 67 sound Poppy and a 47 all day.
Pairs are the best.

REAL 67's? Not even the reissue? And they work well? No way would I (personally) break up that pair.

They are MK67’s, with Neumann transformers, NOS EF86’s, Neumann capsules tuned by Klaus Heyne. Basically a 67, just a lot easier to say 67. photos.app.goo.gl/t1qj28yNtbobSJsR9

With the Neumann BV12 there’s no longer any claim for difference. Those are just good ol’ U67s. And I’d keep em.

I would personally opt for a pair of 67 over the 251. Get the 251 a little later when you can but a pair of 67s are supremely useful!

Hmmm. That's a tough call. They are less valuable from an investment standpoint, but they've got great guts and oughta sound killer.
I dunno man. How badly do you need the 251?

Will the 251s you’re looking at do anything the U67 can’t with a touch of EQ?

Mainly vocal and guitar production? Can't beat a pair of U67. One on guitar and one on vox. That's so many great records, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, that is a go to grade A chain. I'd skip the 251 it's such a specific sound for a specific vocalist and usually female.

From what I know, which isn't much as I've never used an actual 251, but the 251 is much more a mic that either works great...or doesn't. Vs the 67 which rarely will ever fail to sound good on anything and often great on most things.
That alone is reason to keep both 67s to me.
