Hey, I just wanted to share a lightbulb moment I got over the last week with a Plugin called Bassroom. It’s an analyzer/eq dedicated to getting your low end right. Basically, it has a number of preset eq curves for different music styles, you put it on your master buss, and adjust the 5 eq bands (from 20hz to 300 hz) to match the reference curves. It’s been quite eye opening for me. I remember early on in my career, attending Mastering sessions and the first thing the Mastering Engineer would do is hi pass around 40hz, explaining that everything below that is just eating up headroom and very few playback systems reproduce frequencies that low. This is back in the early 90’s and this particular Engineer also cut Vinyl, but anyway, that always really stuck with me. So on my mix buss, I’d routinely put a hi pass filter in that region. So, imagine my surprise, when Bassroom has me ADDING a few dB at 20hz, half a dB at 40hz, etc. and it sounded RIGHT. I know I’m supposed to be using my ears, but I admit, some things I just do because it’s what muscle memory tells me I’m supposed to do. I certainly don’t think my ears would’ve ever directed me to dedicate 5 bands of eq for just the low end. Anyway, I’m in no way affiliated with this company, and this is by no means perfect, but I suggest you give it a trial and see if any lightbulbs go off for you!
Peace
Mitch

I saw this the other day. That company seems to be putting some thoughtful tools.
After watching the videos that only dealt with that product on the master bus, I was wondering how/if the plugin was meant to interact with other master bus options? And would you place first in the chain or later?

And would you place first in the chain or later? I’ve only used it on two mixes I had already started, so I used it last in my chain. It worked great. I think, for me, I would want to get the mix where I think it sounds right and put Bassroom on to see where you’re low end is sitting compared to the targets.

I tried to check it out. Was never sent the download links. On their website, there is a download page that doesn’t require a download link. Hope that helps. Really curious to hear your thoughts on this one Dr Bill!

Their whole online site is jacked up. Basically, that page did the same thing I did yesterday, and again, did not take me to a download link via email or send me links to where I could download. I have an account with them as I previously bought their levels plugin. But it won't let me log in, won't let me reset my password, and won't let me set up a new account. Jacked up!! They are losing customers.....
And pissing off the ones they already have.

I sent them a message on Facebook a few nights back because I also didn't get mailed the links. They answered with a link within an hour, so you might try that.

Cool idea - if it works. There are some videos on YouTube that explain what it does. I only wish one of them would have used some real music instead of the usual electronic drivel. I'd like to know how it works with real instruments.

I've been testing it, pretty cool. Helped me get the lowend a bit fuller and more 3D. I like this company, useful plugins.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I eventually got it, installed it and am playing with it right now. Interesting concept, and uniquely cool. I'm not sure how much I really "need" it though. Still working with it. Need it longer to really decide. One thing it does well is adjust those freq.'s without adding a bunch of schmutz down in the LF. Clean.

I don't find the interface very intuitive. It's easy enough to use but I'm not sure I need 5 low end bands. I love their Levels plugin and I find Expose to be helpful ...I'm still playing with this one so we'll see.

Yeah, I like Levels quite a bit too. To early to tell on this one. It's subtle for me. Makes me think my room is close, or my ears are good, or maybe I'm just lucky.

I use only REL subwoofers in a home stereo system. REL subs can be connected via the .1 cable or a Neutrik Speakon cable that has thin wires that piggyback on your speaker wire outs. So your sub gets the signal at the same time the speaker does.
REL calls their subs "ambient retrieval systems". Turn it of, and the image is 2D, turn it on, 3D. You can sense the room and instruments can be "seen" where they are. So, something's definitely happening between 22 Hz and 80Hz that recreates room ambience. I've always been skeptical of the "there's only mud down there rhetoric".
I'll look into this plug later, thanks for posting Mitch.
. One thing I did was get a VU meter plug. Set drum levels to -3 db, put the bass on, set that level until meter hits 0.db. It's been the best way to balance the low end I've found yet.

Great tip, thanks Martin, I'll try that.
